Christians should be involved in the political process while basing their political beliefs on their faith in God and the living and breathing Word of God. Therefore your three pastors (Pastors David, Jon and Jenn) would like to address some of the comments and misperceptions that exist as our country is in the midst of health care reform. Most everyone would agree health care is in need of reform; however there is disagreement over how to achieve reform. The United Methodist Church in its Social Principles regards healthcare as a basic human right, as well as a responsibility both public and private.
We respect and appreciate the fact that both our local church and our denomination are made of people of diverse political persuasions. A great example of this diversity is the fact both George W. Bush and Hillary Clinton are United Methodists...that’s diversity!
Concerning the health care bill passed on Sunday: It is true the UMC General Board of Church & Society is one of the organizations that voiced support for the health care reform. It is also true that among the 44 United Methodist members in the House, 26 voted no; 18 voted yes. Neither the Board nor the UM members of the House represent the views of the whole denomination because we are a diverse people.
As your pastors, we are called to preach the good news of Jesus Christ. We strongly believe it is divisive for our denomination to take a stand on a controversial political bill. We choose to respond to God’s call to help the poor by actually helping the poor. As part of our Wesleyan tradition, we strongly believe in a close marriage of our beliefs and our actions. Micah 6:8 says, “But he's already made it plain how to live, what to do, what God is looking for in men and women. It's quite simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbor, be compassionate and loyal in your love, and don't take yourself too seriously—take God seriously.”
Our regular behavior is to be active in serving the poor through life-changing ministries and mission projects. That’s the Kingdom of God at work! Water’s Edge and Faith Community United Methodist Church will always be willing to get our hands dirty to make a difference in the world. We will not be known as a people who spend our time issuing political statements. We will speak and act in counter-cultural ways, living out the radical call Jesus has put forth to all followers.
